How does it work?

Involve is the accumulation of years of research and development, aimed at solving many important issues in sound reproduction that no system to-date has been capable of. Indeed most of the great sound companies, including Dolby and Sony have tried to provide systems like Involve but Involve is a true revolution in technology. There are three key reasons why this is true.

Firstly, Involve is a truly circular surround sound system. This is to say it is unlike systems which have gone before it in that is has no bias toward the front, rear or sides. It treats sound in a 360 degree manner and represents sounds in exactly the same place they emanated from and as laid down in the original recording.

Secondly, Involve only reproduces what is in the recording. It is a system that does not rely on echo or delay effects, nor does it create any artifacts , pumping, breathing or coloring and does not compress the recording in any way.

Thirdly, and critically, Involve is fully compatible with stereo. As the vast amount of equipment in use today is almost entirely compatible with stereo and anything recorded in a new format must be able to be reproduced on all current equipment. Further, Involve will decode any other analogue format including Dolby, DTS, SRS, and many others.

Involve is provided completely free of fees and charges to all. There are some reasonable conditions with promoting and advising the fact that it is an Involve recording.

The Involve decoder separates out the sounds and ambient noise in a recording exactly as they would have been heard in the original recording environment, and in a fully circular manner so a human being hears as precisely as possible what was captured in the recording process.

What this means in practical terms is EVERYTHING , television, music, games, sports channels, movies, DVD, CD Internet etc etc when played through Involve sounds exactly as it was recorded in surround sound!

It does not matter that is is broadcast in stereo. If it was recorded in a surround sound format or with surround sound in the stereo that’s the way it will be reproduced. Of course if there is no surround sound in the recording then there will be none reproduced by Involve as it is no way artificial.

Most people do not know that most recordings ranging from the Beatles to a modern TV series like Game of Thrones have surround sound contained within the original recordings and once you hear them with Involve, you not believe what you have been missing.

Involve is also a recording format fully compatible with stereo so all existing equipment will play Involve recordings and they will be heard in exactly the same way any stereo recording is normally heard.

There are significant arguments for the use of encode/decode system.

  • With computer processing power being in abundance, the need for dedicated decoding hardware becomes less and this can be built into other parts of a sound system.
  • Bandwidth restrictions across the spectrum, but particularly Internet, television and telephony related are almost always a factor to be considered when transmitting sound, with or without other data such as video. Encode / decode systems can allow for significant reduction in bandwidth demands, if done well. Arguably they haven’t so far.
  • A complete encode decode system can reproduce sound indistinguishable from discrete channels but with far less bandwidth.
  • A complete encode decode system can extract sound better from old recordings than any other system

The major existing encode/decode format is Dolby Pro-Logic II. It has been the industry leader for many years, and in our view any development that has occurred since its release has only resulted in minor upgrades and patches, with no real evolution to the technology. As it stands, it is still incapable of fully-encompassing surround sound, and cannot reproduce precise and accurate discrete surround channels.

When playing music through Dolby PL-II we find existing audio cues within the stereo signal can be and often are improperly treated, and in many cases ignored by the decoder. This is not intended to denigrate the excellent work of Dolby® and others in the past but it is to say that Involve is a giant leap forward.

With online movie streaming fast becoming a reality (e.g.Netflix launching HD movie streaming on XBOX360), the average person’s Internet connection is being pushed as it is, and coping with reliable transmission of 1080p content is already a strain; any advantage that can be gained in bandwidth is highly desirable.

There is also a push into high resolution and 3D television broadcast, with some fully 3D channels already available around the world. This increases the broadcast bandwidth requirement significantly. Involve 3D can meet this challenge.

A perhaps less well-recognized issue is that deliberate surround sound mixing is only as good as the person who mixes it. If the sound requires mixing a complex environment, it doesn’t just mean putting the sounds where they belong. Other factors such as ambient noise, audio reflections and surfaces within the environment are also important as all of these things contribute to how the human ear detects sound.

In an industry where speed and efficiency is often valued as much or more than the quality, the pressure is intense on recording engineers, and these factors are easily overlooked or ignored. Use of an encode/decode capable of extracting all the original detail of the recording will help engineers significantly and improve the quality of the production and playback. This is true in the movie industry and in the music industry.

Additionally, there is a wealth of stereo and surround-matrix material from the last century which already has the cues and hints that the human ear uses to determine the audio environment it was intended to be in. What is needed is a system that works like the human ear, but doesn’t discriminate according to time, budget or preference. A system that is truly compatible with stereo and all recorded content currently available. Involve is just such a system.

Who should use Involve as a recording format?

  • Companies associated with the recording Industry and the movie/television industry including all companies who currently use Dolby, DTS, SRS as a licensing partner for their recording technology.
  • Television and Broadcasting companies wishing to deliver a more immersive experience including for sports, studio broadcasts, live entertainment, etc.
  • Any organization who is currently looking at or attempting to set audio standards.
  • Any organization who is currently interested in improving the actual reproduction of audio and their by improving the end user experience, particularly those companies offering hardware to the consumer market.
  • Any company or organization interested in limiting the amount of bandwidth required by audio streams.
  • Any company wishing to reduce their costs of licensing fees.

Additionally, cinema screens do not have to be perforated to allow for center speakers behind the screen. Sweet Spot Technology enabled speakers can sit either side and give complete coverage of the sound stage across the screen, which everyone in the audience perceives correctly. In 3D equipped theaters it’s preferable to not have perforated screens due to the reduction in brightness and sharpness, Sweet Spot Technology allows for superior sound without the need for these screens.

Sweet Spot Technology allows for a truly enhanced sound experience in theaters, and does so without the need for an overload of channels. Some companies are trying to push systems of 20 channels and more, which are expensive at all levels and offer little in the way of improved sound to most listeners in a theater. Sweet Spot Technology not only provides better sound but is available at a price similar to most of today’s sound systems.

At home in the lounge room or home theater Sweet Spot Technology allows everyone in the room to get a full stereo or surround sound image regardless of the furniture arrangement as the system is not dependent on room acoustics like sound-bar style devices that bounce sound off the walls.

The result of this is a sagging central image that still doesn’t retain consistency in the stereo stage with respect to the listener position around the room, and in a home surround situation results in the central sound typically, being below the image it supposedly represents.

In stereo, this means that you can sit anywhere in a theater, home cinema or lounge room and listen to a full rich stereo recording.

In surround sound, this gives a correct circular sound stage in the room no matter where you sit. For example: a fly buzzing in the middle of the room. Without Sweet Spot Technology, the sound will seem to be on the side of the room that the listener is on. With Sweet Spot Technology, listeners on the left or the right will both point to the center of the room as the source of the sound.

Another benefit of Sweet Spot Technology is that it adds breadth to the image, creating a holographic sound in stereo or surround, that more closely matches the original sound stage, or the action on a movie screen.

Since Sweet Spot Technology does not require a center speaker (a listener can still have one if preferred) the central image does not appear below or above the screen.
This also means that 2 channel surround virtualizers, which traditionally only work in a very narrow window in the central listening position, are now able to function properly from any seat in the audience.

This is a major advantage to people where space or room restrictions prevent them from installing rear speakers.
